I am writing a review for those people who are in the same difficult situation as our family. Just want to warn, think before you go here. They did not help us ... Moreover, now we understand that they simply did not tell us the truth, promised treatment that everything would be fine and we believed in it, sincerely! They didn’t save on treatment, did everything they recommended, but they just cheerlessly pumped chemistry and prescribed unnecessary consultations like a physiotherapist with charging a hopelessly sick person !!! The company "phoenix" is a soulless creature with the function of receiving money, I don’t even know how to call them anymore ... Doctor Professor Eger also smiled on detours and said that everything would be fine and didn’t even tell the family that the situation was getting worse, she appointed procedures ... As we now understand, everything was clear for a long time, we just wanted to be "treated" because we paid. They tortured our daddy heartlessly and cynically for money !!! Curator Stoyanova stopped responding to letters and the phone immediately, as soon as they informed her that the patient no longer exists. NO ONE! neither she, nor "phoenix", nor the clinic, they even expressed condolences ... It hurts to realize that nothing human is left in people ... We scolded our Russian doctors, and they just told us the truth right away Read more less

The visit to Helios Hospital Krefeld was an utter disaster. I had tests that in Spain would cost around €300 and the overall cost was around €2700. The German hospital charging system for private patients was completely opaque. Bookimed fed us the wrong information throughout the process together with a company that we had never heard of called DMU. Thus we spent a fortnight of useless costs in Germany having be told that my treatment would be around 10 to 14 days. The stress of this together with Prostate Cancer has been immense and we must now return to Spain financially poorer and with very little extra information. Read more less

The hospital is on the level, I felt calm there, I have complete trust in the doctors, you can calmly go for treatment
With the organization of medical services, everything went clearly according to the previous plan. Tatyana, the representative of the company, is very communicative, explains everything, no complaints, even came at 7.30 for the procedure, although there was no translation. I made a slight remark, the price for some services was not announced to me , but in fact it was added... These side effects must also be voiced before the trip...... Not good. The people that I had appointments with did not show up. I met with others who seemed to doubt my records and then claimed that my medical imaging showed no problems whatsoever. I returned home and now seem to have pneumonia in the top of my lungs around the vertebra that are known to have lesions (T1,T2,T3). I consider your service to be a fraud. Read more less

Bookimed is a company of a good modern level, in any case do not think not to trust
I want to evaluate the work of Bookimed as a whole on the results of organizing the treatment of a father well. After examining the results of the surveys, we were presented with options for treatment. Despite the fact that initially we practically had a clinic for treatment selected (on our own), we revised and made a decision to undergo treatment at a clinic in Germany, which Bookimed offered. For all organizational issues, both Bookimed and the logistics company from the clinic offered support. We did everything on our own, but still it is nice when they want to help you. There were minor inconsistencies in organizational issues. But with the mines that provide support, always in touch and help them solve. But as for the treatment process at Helios Krefeld, everything is on the level. The result is satisfied. Of the minuses - the discharge process is not fully organized, the time for receipt of documents is not specific and rather long. A translator is needed. After we returned from treatment, we are awaiting the receipt of documents (conclusions) from the clinic, we have not left us on this issue either. Bookimed is a company of a good modern level, in any case do not think not to trust. The main thing is to keep the level and only raise it. Read more less

"I'm very pleased with the treatment
My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense. From the bottom of my heart I want to thank Professor Gross, as well as all the staff of the Asclepios clinic in Hamburg for their high professionalism, efficiency, sensitivity and attention to patients. About a month ago left an application on the site bookimed, within an hour I was contacted by coordinator Katerina, immediately offered several clinics specializing in oncourology. The choice fell on Asclepios in Hamburg, in particular, Professor Gross. Within a week, thanks to Katerina's efforts, prof. Gross, determined the tactics of treatment and already in a week there was immediate operation. There were some doubts that the nephrectomy could be performed laparoscopically, but the golden hands of prof. Gross know their business. The postoperative period went smoothly, recovered quickly. During the week of the stay, there were no complaints about the work of the staff: attentive, sensitive and affable. Conditions are more than comfortable. The language barrier was not a problem due to the well-coordinated work of the translators Lydia Goncharenko and Vladimir Fissenko. Separately, I want to once again express my gratitude to coordinator Katerina, who was always in touch, quickly resolved all sorts of difficulties.

There was an operation on the soft palate and a gastrocheck. The professor surgeon, a conscientious and attentive person, did an excellent job. There would be more such specialists. I have questions for the accompanying Russian office, nurses and ultrasound doctor: 1) The catheter was installed only the fourth time, and as a result, I now have a damaged vein in my arm that can no longer be restored 2) the ultrasound doctor found two cysts in the thyroid, 1.2 cm each , although this had never happened before, upon arrival home I did a double check, the cysts turned out to be 1.2 mm each, perhaps in the conclusion the comma was placed in the wrong place, or the fact that the doctor was very young 3) support and organization for 3, they took payment for a separate fee, but except for me there was also a man. They promised to recalculate, but they never did, after 3 months. Then I sent photographs to show them to the professor to make sure that everything was ok with the larynx, I first checked whether it was possible to send them. I've been waiting two weeks for an answer, and now they're completely ignoring me. The impression is that after receiving payment, attention and interest in the patient ends.

I underwent an online consultation on the choice of the most optimal treatment option. Since two well-known Moscow clinics gave completely different recommendations for the treatment of my disease (spleen lymphoma): surgical removal of the spleen, or chemotherapy, I decided to ask the opinion of a German professor. Of course, it is very expensive to be treated in Germany, but getting a competent opinion on your specific case, sending all the necessary tests, diagnostics and receiving answers and a treatment regimen, is quite possible: my online consultation cost 650 euros + a written summary with translation into Russian. The whole process, from collecting documents / analyzes, to receiving the final summary, was accompanied by the coordinating doctor Alexey from Bookimed, to whom I am very grateful. He is very responsive, always in touch, answers all questions, but at the same time he is tactful and unobtrusive - a real professional and a very kind person. So, I received answers to my questions, chose the tactics of treatment, and all this for a very reasonable fee. The only drawback is the excess of the stated deadlines, which is not typical, as I think, for the Germans (the consultation was promised within 7 days, in fact it took place 15 days after payment, and the final summary was delayed for a couple of days), it would be better to immediately position the maximum period , then there would be no painful days of waiting. In general, I am satisfied with the result. I think in my case, this is just a very convenient form of counseling that does not require huge material and organizational costs associated with physical travel abroad. I bow to the coordinator Alexei for his patience, tact and professionalism!

We are discharging from the hospital, we will keep in touch with this doctor. The procedures go terribly, there is no specific treatment prescribed yet, there is no diagnosis. Besides the fact that my daughter eats, has lunch, has dinner as in a usual sanatorium, they just rip off 600-700 euros per night - a lot of money when you don’t see the result, why stay, just overnight to pay money. I am not happy with the visit.

FAQ about Oncology in Germany

What makes Germany a global leader in cancer treatment?

german healthcare

1️⃣ Advanced healthcare and technology

Germany consistently ranks as a leader in healthcare innovation. In the 2024 World Index of Healthcare Innovation, Germany’s healthcare system ranked 3rd best globally. It secured the 7th spot for Science & Technology, highlighting its investment in research and development. Germany’s focus on research and development translates into superior cancer treatments, from precision diagnostics to innovative treatments like proton therapy.

2️⃣ High survival rates

germany cancer treatment

In the global CONCORD-2 study published by The Lancet, Germany ranked among the leading countries in terms of five-year survival rates for various cancers. Germany's average five-year survival rate is 62%–66% across all cancer types. This means nearly two-thirds of all cancer patients survive at least five years after diagnosis. To compare, the average five-year survival rate in the UK is 55.7%.

Several common cancers, which together account for almost 40% of cases, show exceptional survival rates exceeding 80%:

  • Breast cancer: 88%
  • Prostate cancer: 91%
  • Testicular cancer: 97%
  • Skin cancer: 93%–95%
  • Thyroid cancer: 88%–94%
  • Hodgkin's lymphoma: 82%–84%
  • Uterine cancer: 81%

3️⃣ Innovative and affordable treatments

Institutions like the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) spearhead groundbreaking research in oncology. Germany ranks 2nd globally in providing affordable and innovative drug treatments. It is also among the world’s top 5 countries running the most clinical trials. As a result, patients benefit from modern drugs and therapies without prohibitive costs.

4️⃣ High-impact government investment

Germany spends almost 13% of its GDP on healthcare, the highest rate in the EU. This ensures:

  • continuous advancements in cancer research;
  • widespread availability of the latest technologies and treatments.

What types of cancer do German clinics treat?

Cancer clinics specialize in treating both common and rare types of cancers:

  • Common cancers. Breast, prostate, lung, colon, rectal, and skin cancers are treated with advanced options like targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and robotic-assisted surgery.
  • Rare and complex cancers. Pancreatic and stomach cancer, brain tumors, and Hodgkin’s lymphoma benefit from precision treatments like HIPEC, proton therapy, and Gamma Knife radiosurgery.
  • Pediatric cancers. Specialized centers address childhood cancers with age-specific therapies.
  • Advanced-stage cancers. Treatments like radioembolization (SIRT) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are available for metastatic cases.

What methods of cancer treatment are available in Germany?

cancer treatment germany: methods

German clinics use a wide array of cancer treatment methods, from traditional approaches to innovations:

1️⃣ Cancer surgery

Surgery remains a cornerstone of cancer care, especially for solid tumors. German hospitals use minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgeries, which reduce recovery time and preserve healthy tissue. Specialized techniques include:

  • Da Vinci robotic surgery uses robotic arms and a 3D camera to perform minimally invasive surgeries with high precision.
  • Neuronavigation-supported surgery for brain tumors allows surgeons to operate with an accuracy of less than a millimeter.
  • Cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC for abdominal cancers combines tumor-removal surgery with heated chemotherapy, which eliminates any remaining malignant cells.

2️⃣ Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells or shrink malignant tumors. German clinics use advanced technologies to target malignant cells precisely:

  • Proton therapy. Delivers highly focused radiation, ideal for tumors near critical organs.
  • CyberKnife and Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Non-invasive techniques for tumors in hard-to-reach places, such as the brain or spine.
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). Real-time imaging ensures radiation hits the tumor with precision.

3️⃣ Chemotherapy

Traditional chemotherapy uses drugs to kill tumor cells or stop their growth. Unlike surgery or radiation therapy, chemotherapy works systemically, meaning it affects the entire body.

4️⃣ Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognize and fight cancer cells. It’s especially effective for cancers that are hard to treat with other methods. Types include:

  • Checkpoint inhibitors. Drugs that help the immune system detect and attack cancer cells.
  • CAR-T cell therapy. Modifies a patient’s immune cells to target specific cancers like leukemia or lymphoma.
  • Cancer vaccines and oncolytic viruses. Train the immune system or destroy cancer cells.

5️⃣ Targeted and hormonal therapies

These treatments focus on specific characteristics of cancer cells:

  • Targeted therapies attack genetic mutations or proteins unique to cancer cells, sparing healthy tissue.
  • Hormonal therapies slow or stop hormone-sensitive cancers (e.g., breast or prostate cancer) by blocking hormones that fuel tumor growth.

6️⃣ Hyperthermic and localized treatments

These treatments focus on specific tumor sites without affecting the rest of the body:

  • Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) delivers heated chemotherapy to the abdominal cavity, targeting cancer cells that remain after surgery.
  • Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) uses tiny beads loaded with radiation to treat liver tumors.
  • High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) uses sound waves to destroy tumors without surgery.
  • Cryotherapy and microwave ablation freeze or heat tumors to kill cancer cells.

🔬 Recent Advances in Cancer Treatment

Recent breakthroughs in cancer research are changing how we diagnose and treat tumor diseases. From AI-powered tools to liquid biopsies and precision therapies, these innovations deliver earlier detection and improved survival rates.

1️⃣ Smarter diagnostics 🧪

  • PET/CT imaging has transformed cancer detection by making it much easier to find the source of cancer in the head and neck. This technology has reduced cases where doctors couldn’t identify the source of cancer in the head and neck from 9% to just 1–2%, allowing tumors to be caught much earlier.
  • AI-powered tools. AI models like TOAD identify tumor origins with 83% accuracy. ‘Sybil’ predicts lung cancer risk up to 6 years in advance from CT scans.
  • Liquid biopsies. These non-invasive blood tests detect cancer with 99% accuracy. They help find tumors at their earliest stages, especially for hard-to-diagnose cancers.

2️⃣ Innovative treatments 🎯

  • Targeted drugs increase survival in pancreatic cancer from 17% to 24% when combined with chemotherapy.
  • Checkpoint inhibitors like nivolumab and pembrolizumab demonstrated overall survival rates of 85% in advanced colorectal cancer.
  • CAR-T therapy leads to remission in 90% of patients with blood cancers like lymphoma.
  • Robotic-assisted surgery helps navigate hard-to-reach areas of the body with greater precision and safety. It has lower risks of blood loss, infection, and reoperation than traditional surgery.
  • Proton beam therapy targets cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. 88% of patients treated with proton therapy do not experience severe side effects requiring hospitalization. In contrast, patients receiving traditional radiation are more than twice as likely to experience such side effects.
  • Cancer vaccines are an innovative cancer treatment that is being studied and tested in the UK and Germany. They train the immune system to target cancer cells and have fewer side effects than chemotherapy.

What diagnostic options are there in Germany?

German clinics offer some of the most advanced tools and techniques for early and accurate diagnosis of cancer:

  • Imaging. PET-CT, MRI, and CT scans help locate and stage tumors.
  • Biopsies. Tissue samples are analyzed to confirm cancer and identify mutations.
  • Cytology. Examines cells from fluids or tissues under a microscope to detect cancer.
  • Genetic testing. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) identifies DNA changes to guide targeted treatments.
  • Endoscopy. Procedures like gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and bronchoscopy use cameras to detect and biopsy tumors in the digestive tract and lungs.
  • Nuclear medicine. Bone scans and SPECT imaging detect cancer spread and activity using small doses of radioactive substances.
  • Blood tests. Tumor markers and blood cell counts can provide early warnings or track progress.

How much does cancer treatment in Germany cost?

The cost of therapy in Germany varies widely depending on the type of cancer, stage, treatment methods, and clinic. Chemotherapy starts at approximately $2,500 (€1,800–€2,000), while complex cancer surgeries may cost up to $32,000 (€30,000–€32,000)
