Saniya Abdulova • Pituitary adenoma Kazakhstan Apr 29, 2019

The Liv Hospital Clinic confused my diagnosis. Within two hours, I thought I had cancer.  I immediately wrote to them, the answer came in two and a half hours, as they had no time to double-check. During all this time, my family and I went crazy with horror. Now they wrote to me that the translators were wrong. But pituitary adenoma is spelled the same in all languages. A malignant formation of the parotid gland is a completely different diagnosis. Read more less

"Clinic definitely recommend
When they learned what was needed in the clinic, they didn’t even know where to run and whom to contact. Coordinators helped to select a clinic. They gave us a doctor. Everything went great, the doctor is a true professional.  Separately, I want to note the attitude to patients. We were met at the airport, brought to the clinic and there was already a translator waiting. Literally "by the hand" we were taken to the doctors, everyone translated. Then they provided a taxi to the hotel.   During the operation, the ward was provided for two people - for the patient and the attendant; both of them were included in the cost of the operation.   After surgery, the doctor held a consultation, making sure that you can fly back. And only then answered questions remotely that arose.  Clinic definitely recommend Read more less

What is important to know about radiotherapy?

  • The latest generation radiotherapy devices are the most accurate and safe. They are equipped with a 3D imaging system that delivers the radiation beam with an accuracy of 0.5 mm, so the impact on healthy tissue is minimal. For comparison, the accuracy of irradiation using old installations is a few cm.
  • The newer the equipment, the higher the effectiveness of radiation therapy. Devices of 2003-2008 were installed in domestic clinics, 2013-2018 in foreign ones.
  • Irradiation on the device of the latest generation will pass quickly. 1 session takes 10-15 minutes. For comparison, radiotherapy with older devices lasts 30-60 minutes.
  • The cost of radiation therapy abroad is not always higher. The price of radiation therapy on a linear accelerator of the latest generation in a foreign clinic can be the same as with the help of an old one in a domestic hospital.

The directory lists the best clinics for radiation therapy. The rating is based on the choice of our patients. Leave a request on the website so that a Bookimed coordinating doctor will contact you at a convenient time for you. He will answer your questions, tell you about the features of the procedure, guide you on the cost of treatment and help you choose the best medical center for your case. Memorial is more than a hospital. It is home from home. Very hospitable and caring staff who show a lot of empathy. My one night stay in the hospital was a delightful experience, kind and available staff, every neat and hygienic room. The doctors are on top of their job. I was taken through a lecture in nuclear physics 101, broken in simple language. The lecturer helped allayed my initial fears about the treatment. The treatment was speedy and the results came so quickly. The doctor was by my bedside to explain the next steps. The translator was fantastic. The transportation service was superb, always on time. I got more than value for my money. I will strongly recommend Memorial Sisli Hospital for any person seeking Lu-177 therapy

Very pleased with the attitude towards patients. The staff was polite and courteous. They responded quickly to all my needs. They suggested the best alternative treatment and were very tactful during the operation. The operation was done under local anaesthesia, and painkillers have very little effect on me, but the doctor was very sensitive and understanding of my condition and patiently waited and increased the dose of anaesthesia until the action started. And during the whole operation constantly asked about my condition and even on small reactions of pain, which were reflected apparently in my face immediately responded. And the assistants (nurses) were close by, giving emotional support. I would especially like to mention the attitude of the interpreter Rabia, who was always in touch with me throughout my stay and answered at any time of the day, despite the workload I saw. This is very human of her when you don't know anything and don't know the language. I would like to thank the clinic and all the medical staff for the help provided and for the sensitive attitude towards each client.

Many thanks to Dr Bora Basharan and Alisher Durdiev! Diagnosis: carcinoma on the tongue. Alisher was very helpful with the choice and full support during the treatment. He gave us confidence in choosing Dr Bora Basharan by telling us about his professionalism and humanity. The most important thing for Alisher was the patient's health and to organise the diagnosis/surgery so that the patient gets the best results. We are very happy about this. We could not decide on the treatment (we were waiting for answers from South Korea) and Alisher did not give up to provide us with doctor's answers, answer our many questions and help with organisation. His ability to speak excellent Russian helped a lot in communication. The first meeting organised by Alisher went well. The doctor explained everything about the surgery and gave us peace of mind due to his experience as a highly specialised ENT surgeon in oncology. The operation went well and the follow up health checks. The recovery is good. We read many positive reviews online about Dr Bor Basharan which gave us more confidence. The reviews are true. After the surgery we were given a room with excellent food and the recovery was good. Thank Allah that we met Alisher and Dr Bora Basharan, for his golden hands, good surgery and organisation. Thank you very much again! Good health to all!

From the minute I was inquiring about an appointment through to an entire 2 hours of tests, I felt completely taken care of. Being in a foreign country where it’s not your first language can be daunting when needing healthcare. My healthcare navigator Leen was so wonderful. She brought me to each doctor or department, got me situated and was also my translator. She was kind, compassionate & so incredibly helpful. I was incredibly grateful to have her by my side. I saw Dr. Bassols who was incredibly warm, knowledgeable and put my fears at ease. The other technicians were also wonderful and caring. I highly recommend the staff and care I received at Centro Medico Teknon and the team from bookimed that connected me to them. Thank you everyone!!

I had a terrible experience. Dr. Zielinski was dismissive and rushed me, he hasn't answered my questions and he asked me for more tests in order to speak about treatment plans when I was told previously that I didn't need any tests in order to proceed with the consultation and receive a treatment plan. He didn't bother to explain the disease or treatment options. I was looking forward to speak to him and I put so much hope. I needed someone to explain and guide me. I was left with such a bed feeling after the consultation. No empathy and no professionalism. Bookimed apologise but they said that they can't do anything because I paid directly the clinic, even if they are the intermediary they don't take responsibility, so be very careful when booking any services. I wasted 400 euros for 10 minutes that I was trying to make a few questions in order to get some value for the money but the only thing I got was disappointment, frustration, stress and time waste for arguing. I asked for at least to have some questions asked in writing so I could get something back for my money, but they refused, and they said that the consultation was compleated. In the first place, they said that I had a second consultation for free because it wasn't compleated, and then they said it was a mistake and the consultation was compleated. Please be careful where you spend your money and put your hopes because they don't care about taking advantage of ill people in order to make money. Probably are not all the same but my experience was awful and I am very disappointed. Some become doctors because they want to help people and others have no feelings or empathy. I hope this helps whoever is reading and I hope you find a better option than I did with a doctor that cares and will help you. God bless.

We got to the MEMORIAL clinic due to an urgent diagnosis. The successful outcome of the operation depended on promptness. The question was about days. The operation was carried out the next day. The most difficult operation according to the Whipple method. Conducted by professor, head of surgery. Low bow to him. The entire staff of the department works perfectly, promptly responds to any request. Separately, I want to say about the work of the translator Aida. High qualification, operational work at any time of the day, sincerity - only a small description of her qualities. Special thanks for providing meals to the patient and accompanying person. The cuisine is very tasty, in some positions it is better than homemade. I enjoyed the vegetarian cuisine. But there is a different one. A low bow to all the staff of the clinic. They saved my husband's life.

The next morning, consult a doctor. All questions were solved almost instantly, the results of all analyzes and studies were ready the next day. And constantly in touch with the coordinator Catherine and care worker Alexander. In my trips to the clinic, I was accompanied by a super translator Yulya Sukhneva. Thanks to the clear and professional work of Julia, Kati and Alexander, my stay was very short, I saved money on the hotel. The hotel, by the way, was excellent, up to the clinic, 200 meters. Yes, and more, the prices for consultations and analyzes are quite comparable with those in Moscow. I spent much less money than I thought at first. Thank you all!

My name is Sergey, I am undergoing treatment at the oncology department of the Nordwest Clinic in Frankfurt am Main. I would like to note the high professional level of doctors, the technical equipment of the clinic at the proper level. I want to express special gratitude to Professor Elka Yeager, senior doctor Kiselichki, Dr. Weber, the highest level of professionalism, are very friendly and attentive, the junior staff are smart, everything is super, I’m very pleased with the treatment, if not for one “but” ... Because of ignorance language had to contact the company "Phoenix Service", which is an intermediary for the provision of medical services, led by Radislav. My communication with them began with the fact that before arrival they demanded a significant prepayment, which was timely transferred to their account. After arriving at the clinic, I had to transfer money several times, rather big money. I persistently asked the company’s employees to conclude an agreement with me on the provision of services by Phoenix Service, in order to specifically understand which services and for what specific payment the services will be provided. However, no contracts, as well as invoices with prices, were provided to me, which directly testifies to dishonesty. Only two months later I received the clinic’s bills (with which I completely agree) and separately a bill from Phoenix Service for the services rendered, after viewing which there were simply no words ... As it turned out, being treated in Germany was not expensive, it was expensive to pay for the services of Phoenix invoiced, which either didn’t turn out at all, or turned out to be in the wrong amount and at very high prices. I tried to talk with the head of the company Radislav, saying that I did not agree with the bill, to which I received the answer "if something does not suit you, you can refuse our services further." I officially wrote an appeal to the clinic about the detachment from this dishonest company, to which I received a positive response. He also wrote an official letter to Phoenix with a request to review the account, to which he still has not received an answer. I want to warn everyone who is in my position, those cancer patients who sell everything in order to pay for treatment and live on, but these “phoenixes” don’t stop at anything to enrich themselves at their expense.

All You Need to Know about Radiotherapy

What is the essence of radiation therapy and why is it performed?

The main task of radiation therapy (radiotherapy) is to destroy cancer cells. This is due to exposure to radiation, which destroys their DNA.

The location of the tumor and the stage of the disease affect the goal of radiation therapy. Depending on this, the following types of procedures are distinguished:

  • Therapeutic. As the only method of treatment, radiation therapy is used:
    • with neoplasms that are difficult to access for surgery;
    • in the early stages of some types of cancer;
    • in oncohematological diseases, when it is necessary to irradiate the entire body.
  • Neoadjuvant is preoperative radiation. Doctors perform it to reduce the neoplasm and preserve tissues as much as possible during the operation.
  • Adjuvant - postoperative therapy. Destroys metastases (secondary tumors) and cancer cells that remained after the intervention in the area of the removed neoplasm.
  • Intraoperative - in some cases, replaces adjuvant radiotherapy. Doctors perform it during surgery after removing the visible part of the tumor to destroy the remaining cancer cells.
  • Palliative - indicated for patients with large inoperable neoplasms in the advanced stages of cancer to relieve symptoms.

What determines the cost of radiation therapy?

Factors that affect the cost of radiotherapy:

  • Tumor localization. The price will be higher if the tumor is located near large vessels or nerves and requires special accuracy and complexity of beam adjustment.
  • Dose, number of irradiated zones and sessions. The more of them, the higher the price of radiotherapy.
  • Selected country and clinic. The cost of radiotherapy in different countries can vary several times. For example, 1 course in Turkey costs from $3,068, and in Spain - from $9,371. This is due to the difference in pricing policies for medical services in states. Prices for radiation for cancer in different hospitals in the same country depend on the type of facility (private/public) and class
  • Additional medical services. These include the cost of tickets to the selected country, transfer from / to the airport, translation services, accommodation. In some clinics, the services of a Russian-speaking coordinator, translator, transfer and accommodation are included in the cost of treatment. Check with the Bookimed coordinating doctor when choosing a medical center.

How much does a course of radiation therapy cost?

The table shows the estimated cost of a course of radiation therapy in different countries. Prices in some countries differ by several times, while the leading clinics of all these countries have the latest devices of the latest generation.

Where can I read reviews of radiotherapy?

You can read the reviews about radiotherapy left by Bookimed patients in the clinic cards on this page. Here is one of them. He was left by a woman whose aunt was undergoing radiation therapy at the Solingen clinic in Germany.

Good afternoon everyone! The bookimed company helped a lot in solving the terrible misfortune that happened in my family - this is cancer, namely the consultant Koval Ivan, gave hope for my aunt's recovery. A few words about how bookimed advised us with the hospital: we submitted an application with a specific problem, and on the same day consultant Ivan called us back, exactly one day later we were offered three options for hospitals in Europe with a full description of doctors and the cost of treatment. A week later, we were already in Germany for an appointment with Professor Dr. Hensch, the consultation was held at a very high level. Now my aunt is being treated and I am sure that the treatment will be successful.)) I think my aunt will tell you in more detail after she has fully recovered. Personally, on behalf of myself and all of my family, I want to say a HUGE thank you to Bookimed and Ivan for the quality work.

What do Bookimed patients look for when choosing a clinic?

When choosing a medical center for radiation therapy, you need to pay attention to:

  • Year of manufacture of the device. The newer the unit, the more accurate, effective and safer the radiotherapy will be. Therefore, choose a clinic that uses units no older than 2013.
  • Qualified radiation oncologist. Leading experts in this field have at least 15 years of practical experience. It is important that he has regular fellowships in other countries (eg USA) and is a member of international organizations such as the American Society of Radiation Oncology ( ASTRO ) and the European Association for Radiation Therapy and Oncology ( ESTRO ).

What are the types of radiation therapy?

Depending on the method of irradiation, the following types of procedures are distinguished:

Remote (external) radiation therapy

Doctors irradiate the tumor using a special device - a linear accelerator, which is located at a distance from the patient and produces radiation beams.

The Cancer Research UK charitable organization distinguishes the following types of remote radiotherapy:

  • 3D-conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) - the device creates a three-dimensional model of the neoplasm and acts on it from different angles;
  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) - allows you to accurately calculate the doses of radiation required for each of the areas of the tumor, and adjust the beam to the shape of the tumor.
  • Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) – During the procedure, the machine takes CT scans of the tumor. Thanks to this, the doctor can correct the position of the patient's body and accurately direct the radiation beam to the neoplasm.
  • Hypofractional stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT) is an exposure of a neoplasm to a high dose of radiation. The procedure is only indicated for certain forms of cancer (eg, liver, lung, spine).
  • Proton beam therapy - during such treatment, the destruction of cancer cells occurs due to a beam of protons. The radiation dose is lower than with other types of radiotherapy.

Contact radiation therapy (brachytherapy)

Doctors place a source of radiation (needles, capsules, seeds) inside or near the tumor. The substance affects the neoplasm locally and does not harm the body as a whole.

Radionuclide therapy

The patient takes an oral or intravenous drug with radiation that accumulates in malignant cells. Radionuclide methods of irradiation include radioiodine therapy.

How is radiation therapy performed?

external beam radiation therapy

This is a painless procedure that does not require anesthesia. Moreover, if the patient is a child, doctors use special sedatives that calm him down and allow him to lie still during the irradiation session.

During the procedure, the patient is on a special couch. His body is given the necessary position and fixed to avoid displacement. If necessary, also fix the head with a special mesh.

Brachytherapy

It is performed under local or general anesthesia. The doctor places radioactive grains into the organ with special needles. He controls the course of the procedure using ultrasound.

Radioiodine therapy

Under the supervision of a doctor, the patient takes a capsule with an individual dose of radioiodine , which is selected according to the results of the examination. The radionuclide does not harm the patient's body, but may affect the health of others. Therefore, for 3-7 days he remains in an individual ward with a special ventilation system.

What side effects and complications can occur after irradiation?

After remote radiation therapy, the patient may experience systemic complications associated with the general condition, and local ones in the area in which the radiotherapy took place.

Local

Systemic

burns

Weakness

Fragility of blood vessels

Violation of hematopoiesis

Small focal hemorrhages

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

Ulceration of the irradiated surface

Hair loss, brittle nails

How long does treatment last at Bookimed partner clinics?

The mode of radiation therapy depends on its type:

  • Duration of 1 session of remote radiation therapy is 10-45 minutes. The course takes, on average, 2 weeks (5 procedures each). The number of courses is individual for each patient. Doctors determine the need for hospitalization according to the general state of health. In some cases, a single irradiation of the tumor (radiosurgery) is indicated.
  • Brachytherapy takes 1.5 hours, hospitalization after it - 2 days.
  • After taking radioactive iodine, the patient stays in the clinic for an average of 7 days.
