Prof. Dr. med. Axel Hillmann - Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology and leading spesialist at the Center for Sarcoma and Musculoskeletal Tumors.
Prof. Hillmann masters a complex surgical procedure that allows patients to have greater mobility and a problem-free everyday life after a tumor removal on the leg: rotationplasty.
Rotationplasty is an alternative surgical procedure to limb sparing surgery. It is most commonly advocated for young patients with bone cancer. It has been undertaken in older patients and in other skeletal locations such as the hip and shoulder. For distal femoral tumours it involves removing the section of cancerous bone.
After such an operation, however, not only the body, but also the brain must be trained. Because the impulse, which is actually responsible for the ankle, now moves the prosthesis, which replaces the lower leg.
