Biography
Associate Professor Koray Aykut is currently the cardiovascular surgeon of İzmir University. Previously, he was surgeon at Ege Hospital from 2008 to 2013. His specific teaching and research interests cover adult heart surgery and vascular surgery. He has authored 10 articles that are published in peer-review journals listed by SCI and SCI-e and 8 articles that are published in national journals.
Associate Professor Koray Aykut was graduated from Ege university in 1999 and completed residency of cardiovascular surgery in Dokuz Eylül University in 2005. He was cardiac surgeon in Kars State Hospital from 2005 to 2007 for compulsory service. He has been in Cyprus Army Hospital from 2007 to 2008 for his military service.

In 2007, I graduated from Trakya University, Faculty of Medicine and received the title of “Medical Doctor”. In the same year, as a result of the TUS exam I took, I started my specialization training at Istanbul University, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery.
During my specialization training, in 2010, I worked as a guest doctor at “Lenox Hill Hospital, Aortic Wellness Center” in New York, USA, on aortic valve-preserving surgery, aortic root surgery, aortic arch surgery, thoracoabdominal aortic surgery and robotic heart surgery.
In 2013, I worked as a “fellow” at the “Landeskrankenhaus Salzburg, Paracelsus Universitätsklinik für Gefäßchirurgie und endovaskuläre Chirurgie” clinic in Salzburg, Austria, and conducted studies on endovascular and advanced vascular surgery techniques.
In 2013, I worked as a visiting physician at the “Vita-Salute University, Scientific Institute, Ospedale San Raffaele, dipartimento di chirurgia vascolare ed endovascolare” clinic in Milan, Italy, on endovascular techniques, advanced vascular techniques and surgical treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms.
In 2013, I completed my assistant training and earned the title of “Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist”.
As of 2014, I started working as a “Specialist Doctor” at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Ondokuz Mayıs University.
In 2016, I received the title of “Assistant Professor Doctor”. In the same year, I received the “Certificate of Proficiency” issued by the “Turkish Cardiovascular Surgery Qualification Board”.
In 2017, I worked as a visiting doctor for 3 months at the “Landeskrankenhaus Nürnberg, Paracelsus Universitätsklinik für Gefäßchirurgie und endovaskuläre Chirurgie” clinic in Nuremberg, Germany, on advanced endovascular (FEVAR, BEVAR, CHEVAR, EVAR, TEVAR) techniques in aortic diseases.

Since 2014 he has been part of the GVM group and works at various private and accredited facilities throughout the country. Dr. Sangiorgi has been a confirmed Researcher since 1998, and in 2010 he obtained the qualification to Associate Professor of Cardiology at the University of Padua. He is Professor of Cardiovascular Pathology at the School of Specialization in Pathological Anatomy of the University of Tor Vergata and Contract Professor for the Peripheral Interventional Course at the Department of Vascular Surgery of the University of Sassari. Dr. Sangiorgi's scientific activity mainly concerns the pathology and physiopathology of the cardiovascular sy, with particular reference to coronary and carotid atherosclerotic disease and restenosis after interventional procedures. Furthermore, Dr. Sangiorgi has constantly dealt with issues related to interventional cardiology with particular reference to the medium and long-term results of the use of various platforms of implantable medical devices.
In carrying out these activities he used anatomo-pathological, histochemical and ultrastructural methods. He also dedicated himself particularly to morphometric techniques applied to cardiovascular pathology.
Since September 1993 he has had the opportunity to dedicate himself, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (USA), in the Laboratory of Experimental Interventional Cardiology directed by Dr. Robert Schwartz, to the study of the morphology, physiopathology and pathology of restenosis and vascular remodeling mechanical revascularization interventions.

In 1998 he received the third prize as “ Young Researcher ” from the American Heart Association for the discovery of cellular apoptosis in aortic valves in patients affected by aortic stenosis and the first prize from the Italian Society of Cardiology as “Young Researcher” for the discovery of a new serum marker for the risk of STROKE in December 2001.
