Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erkan Yıldırım is a thoracic surgeon with Turkish Thoracic Surgery Proficiency Certification (2003). He is also a member of the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons (FETCS). Dr. Yıldırım completed fellowships at several international centers. At the Toronto Lung Transplant Program, he took part in 85 recipient surgeries and nearly 100 donor organ procurements.

Dr. Yıldırım wrote Turkey’s first overseas clinical publication on lung transplantation. He has presented at 37 international and 19 national congresses. He serves as a reviewer for leading journals and holds four patents in biomedical engineering. His areas of expertise include lung cancer, chest wall tumors, mesothelioma, benign lung diseases, and advanced chest wall deformity surgeries.

I am confident I am going to beat this breast tumor with the help of the wonderful care given at Hisar Intercontinental Hospital

I was really nervous about a new breast lump that developed. I reached out to Book I med and explained my situation. I was directed to Hisar Intercontinental Hospital. They did biopsy, ultrasound and PET scan. Although I wanted surgery, doctor explained it wasn't in my best interest and recommended medication instead. Doctors were careful to come up with plan, they didn't rush to make decisions. I had a medical coordinator who assisted in transportation to and from hospital and coordinating tests and doctor visits. I was also assigned an interpreter for Turkish to English.They were both wonderful and it was nice to have assistance and smiling faces when I arrived. They always took time to listen to concerns and answer questions. I met with 2 doctors, a breast cancer surgeon and oncologist. They both were professional and friendly. They met with a tumor board of physicians to discuss my plan.I feel like I got professional care and good treatment plan. The hospital was clean and modern. They did a good job with the tests, I didn't feel any pain from the doctor who did my biopsy. Believe me when you have something as scary as a breast lump you want to be in good hands.I paid for each test and medication individually with credit card. I was told the cost before each purchase. Even though the whole bill wasn't cheap, it's much much lower cost than I could get in United States. As a self pay patient I am glad for that also. So overall even though I was struggling with something really bad(tumor) I feel like I got great and professional care at a decent price. I would truly recommend this to anyone. And Turkey is such a beautiful country with friendly people. There is hidden artwork everywhere. So even though I am going through this ordeal being in beautiful Turkey makes it not so bad. The food here is really good and cheap. I'm staying in Old city which has tons of Cafe restaurants. In your spare time just sitting at a Cafe and watching the myriad of people walking by is fun. I am confident I am going to beat this breast tumor with the help of the wonderful care given at Hisar Intercontinental Hospital.

I would like to thank the clinic and all the medical staff for the help provided and for the sensitive attitude towards each client

Very pleased with the attitude towards patients. The staff was polite and courteous. They responded quickly to all my needs. They suggested the best alternative treatment and were very tactful during the operation. The operation was done under local anaesthesia, and painkillers have very little effect on me, but the doctor was very sensitive and understanding of my condition and patiently waited and increased the dose of anaesthesia until the action started. And during the whole operation constantly asked about my condition and even on small reactions of pain, which were reflected apparently in my face immediately responded. And the assistants (nurses) were close by, giving emotional support. I would especially like to mention the attitude of the interpreter Rabia, who was always in touch with me throughout my stay and answered at any time of the day, despite the workload I saw. This is very human of her when you don't know anything and don't know the language. I would like to thank the clinic and all the medical staff for the help provided and for the sensitive attitude towards each client.

The clinic is located in a very convenient neighbourhood. And the clinic itself provides a huge range of services. Everything is within walking distance. The wards are clean, comfortable and with all the facilities.

But my choice to do this exam in this hospital is I think a good decision

I appreciate the quick answer and avability of the exam at the dates i was in Istambul. Good service airport transfert and accomodation in a city where yu feel lost. The people at the hospital pas efficient, and the exam went well. Or suppose so. Some little things are les noticable when you have important exam. - forget to pick-up me at hotel. - came for a consultation ans doctor was not there.... - not sure the oncologist looked at rhe pictures closely. I have no idea of the quality of report. Can tell more after other consultation with a health-professional. But my choice to do this exam in this hospital is i think a good décision. I will recommand it.

The consultation with the doctor was easy and instilled confidence and calm

Everything is fine. There was a slight delay in the transfer upon arrival at the airport. Then they arrived promptly, the drivers were polite, the cars were clean. The hotel is a little far away, but nice, spacious room, clean. There were not enough slippers in the hotel, otherwise everything was fine, the staff was helpful. I underwent PET CT diagnostics with 68, the examination was carried out perfectly. Special thanks to the coordinators of Bookimed and the clinic, and the translator. The consultation with the doctor was easy and instilled confidence and calm. It would be nice to get a translation of the conclusion in Russian or English right away.

However, on the day of the procedure, it turned out that there is no diagnostic equipment in the clinic itself, so my mother was sent to the laboratory to the machine that the clinic was in control of, everything is fine, but Yulduz did not go with her mother, and my mother spoke on the fingers there, and after a while she phoned Yulduz by telephone for telephone translation. Video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy (VATS)

The doctor performs the procedure through 3-5 incisions up to 2.5 cm. Through one incision, he inserts a tube with a camera that controls the course of the procedure. Through the remaining 2 incisions, he performs manipulations with special instruments.

Advantages: the procedure leaves small scars. Recovery is 2-3 times faster than after open surgery.

Disadvantages: VATS provides the surgeon with less visibility than a thoracotomy.

Preparing for the operation

Preparation for a lung lobectomy includes:

blood analysis;
chest CT;
sampling and laboratory examination of tumor tissues;
positron emission computed tomography (PET-CT).

The course of the procedure

During the operation, the patient is under general anesthesia. Depending on the type of lobectomy, the surgeon performs an incision 8-20 cm long or 3 incisions of 2.5 cm each, and removes a lobe of the lung.

Duration of lobectomy

The intervention takes 2 to 3 hours.

Rehabilitation after removal of part of the lung

The duration of hospitalization after removal of a lung lobe for cancer depends on the technique. After an open operation, a person stays in the clinic for 1-2 weeks, after a low-traumatic operation - 4-5 days.
